What is Mentoring?

"....I needed someone to listen to me and be there...."

A mentor is some one who spends a couple of hours each week with you, talking to you about things that interest you or concern you and doing things with you that you enjoy.

A mentor can help you work through difficult situations, do practical things like job-hunting and filling in application forms or just listen to you and be a friend.

You get to choose the kind of person that you would like to be your mentor and you are free to leave or ask for a new mentor at any time.

To get a mentor you need to make a referral or have a referral made for you. You then meet with the project co-ordinator who will talk to you about the kind of person you would like to be your mentor and how you see them helping and supporting you. The coordinator will then match you with a mentor and you will be introduced to them. If both of you are happy with the match the mentor will contact you and arrange a meeting.

How to Get a Mentor

If you think you would like a mentor, you can be referred to the mentoring project in a number of ways:

An agency referral i.e. Children’s Services, GP, School
The agency worker can call the Mentoring Coordinator who will take your contact details (if the you are under 16 then your parent /carer contact details will also be needed) and will make contact with you (or parent/carer if you are under16). It is important that if the referral is coming from an agency that the you are aware of the referral and have agreed that mentoring is what you want.

A parental / carer referral
A parent can call the Mentoring Coordinator who will arrange a time to go and visit them and you to discuss mentoring and make an application to the project. It is important that if a parent or a carer makes a referral to the project that you are aware of this referral and have agreed that mentoring is something that you want.

Self-referral
You can refer yourself to the project by calling the Mentor Coordinator or dropping in to The Source. The Mentor Coordinator will arrange an interview with you to make an application. If you are under 16 the interview will need to be done in the presence of your parent/carer.
